What do I wear for class?

Anything that is comfortable that still allows your teacher to see what your body is doing. So we prefer no skirts or super baggy t-shirts. We suggest dance pants and a singlet or tshirt with either jazz shoes, ballet flats or foot strings. No sneakers - they stick to the floor.

Where are the classes currently held?

At the moment we have classes on the Gold Coast and in Canberra. For more information on these classes, click on the classes page.

Can I watch a class first before signing up?

You won't know you like bellydance until you get up and try it - go on, be brave! There are no spectators in class, just participants. The first class is free so make sure you arrive to your class 10 minutes prior to introduce yourself to your teacher and let her know any medical conditions or injuries you have in advance.

What is your refund policy?

If you have to cancel your place up to one week before the start of each block  you will receive a 100% refund. After that refunds are only available if you have to cancel your place due to medical reasons, you will be refunded for all classes paid for after the date you notify us. Alternatively you can carry those classes forward if you can attend at a later date. We DO allow transfers so if you want to pass your class card or block fees to someone else, that is no problem, just send us an email advising us of the transfer.

How can I pay?

All classes are structured on a block (10 classes) system and payment is required up front. Payment can be made by  EFT, cheque, money order or cash at class. Further information on how to pay is on each class page (GC & ACT)

Can I bring my daughter/mother/grandmother?

Absolutely! Belly dance has been passed down traditionally through generations of women. We believe that to learn with your family  and closest friends, it keeps the spirit of the feminine close to you throughout your journey with those you trust.

My first class was really hard. I don't know if I can do this.

Yes you can. The first few classes can be quite daunting as it is a whole new realm of movement to initiate for you, so hang in there. Our teachers are very aware of how overwhelming this new art is to learn so ensure you voice any concerns with your teacher.

I am pregnant. Can I still bellydance?

To begin bellydance classes with Spellbound, you'll need to get clearance from your midwife/doctor/medical professional. We prefer that you begin classes within your first trimester (up to 12 weeks) so if you are over this point, please consult with your midwife/doctor/medical professional and provide a written clearance when you attend your first class. During pregnancy, we need to ensure you avoid any twisting movements.

Do you have to show your belly?

No. Even when performing, many professional dancers keep their stomachs covered. During class you only need to reveal what you are comfortable with. Your teacher may show her belly and sometimes ask that you lift your shirt so you can observe your own movement. This is always optional and is your choice.

What if I don't want to perform - ever?

There are so many reasons why a person may study belly dance - for health and fitness, for social or relaxation purposes, to gain confidence and self-acceptance, to learn a new skill, to do something for themselves, because it is fun, to express themselves creatively and artistically, to feel sexy and learn to feel comfortable in their own skin, etc. You never have to perform. It is OK to just take classes, which is very fun and rewarding too.

Can I bring my children?

Whilst we encourage family to come and enjoy the classes, we find that having little ones running around can be quite distracting (not just for the class but for mum too), so where it can't be helped, your children will absolutely be welcome and we just request that they try to keep noise to a minimum and bring plenty of toys for them to occupy themselves  for the class. Should we find we get quite a large group of mums who need to bring bubs and little ones, we could look into a carer for the class so if you are interested in this service, let your teacher know. Aradia is looking into a dads group get together in Southport for her Gold Coast dancers so the dads can mind the kiddles in the RSL next door while our mums get a well earned break.
